DESCRIPTION

UCSD Department of Dermatology was founded in January 2015 bringing together a team of 70 faculty members specializing in Adult and Pediatric & Adolescent Dermatology, making us one of the largest Dermatology programs in the nation. Our faculty are experts in their fields and are involved in a wide range of clinical, education and research endeavors. UCSD Dermatology has an extensive basic science and clinical research portfolio that allows for substantial funding support from NIH and extramural sources.

Dermatology faculties have rich programs of skin research focused on immunology, microbiology, genetics and cancer. They have funded research programs on: 1) studies on the development of the innate immune system and its interaction with the skin microbiome, 2) trials comparing alternative treatments for management of psoriasis, rosacea and atopic dermatitis biologics, 3) studies of biomarkers for acne and acne rosacea, 4) the study of genetics and epigenetics of human skin development and progression to disease, 5) atopic dermatitis inflammation and antimicrobial peptides and 6) skin cancer development and melanoma acquired drug resistance.

Under supervision, the research laboratory assistant will be responsible for assisting in executing biochemical, genetic, and molecular biology experiments using tissue culture cells, mammalian tissue samples, and occasionally on live animals (mice). In addition, the research laboratory assistant will be expected to perform general lab management, including ordering, preparation of reagents/solutions, maintenance of lab equipment, and assurance of lab safety/regulatory compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Theoretical knowledge of biology, immunology, cell biology or related field.

• Demonstrated experience with techniques for protein expression and purification.

• Demonstrated experience with PCR/QPCR.

• Proven experience with basic cell culture techniques.

• Thorough knowledge of sterile techniques.

• Proven experience with data analysis using basic calculations and Excel software.

• Strong skill in accurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze and calculate data.
