The Role:
The Colleague Support Advisor is a new role within M&G designed specifically to be the focal point of contact for colleagues to seek advice, support and guidance on a range of sensitive individual Human Resources matters and issues. The role will build strong relationships with the M&G Colleague Forum, the M&G Unite Section, the HR People Advisor Team, the Colleague (Diversity) Networks and the Diversity, Inclusion & Wellbeing Team. The role will also have the remit to build awareness and energy around the HR model and specifically the Colleague Advisory and Support service they will lead. They will also have a role in engaging with the wider HR function on relevant colleague advice and support topics and upskilling other HR colleagues where necessary. The role will report directly to the Group Head of Employee Relations.
Don't think about this role as a traditional Employee Relations Case Advisor role. The purpose of this role is very much to support individual colleagues, to be a sounding board, to offer early support, advice and guidance which may negate the need for formal HR processes but critically to also provide support to colleagues where a formal process is appropriate.
This is a permanent opportunity.
Key Work Level Accountabilities:
Manager or Expert:
- For people managers, accountable for managing and motivating others to ensure quality of delivery to customers and stakeholders
- For technical specialists, accountable for delivering expert advice or service, using specialist knowledge and subject matter expertise

Key Responsibilities for this role:
- Build out the profile of the new Colleague Advisory Support available to colleagues across M&G
- Build relationships across the organisation with our Colleague Forum, Unite and Colleague Diversity Networks to proactively identify areas where our employment policy / practices can become more inclusive / change for the better
- Work in partnership within the HR function specifically our HR advisors, ER Case Advisors and HRBPs using your expertise and experience to build further capability in handling sensitive areas of concern for colleague
- Provide advice and guidance to colleagues on how to approach and seek to resolve areas of concern:
- How to prepare for and approach what a colleague feels may be a difficult conversation with a manager or peer
- Walking through the options open to colleagues if they wish to raise a concern and providing ongoing support throughout that process
- Being a sounding board for colleagues if they are trying to compute feedback or messaging that has been shared with them
- Where appropriate support the resolution of colleague concerns through appropriate early interventions such as facilitating further discussions between two colleagues, coaching or mediation
- Supporting colleagues to prepare for formal grievance and disciplinary processes, including acting as the employee companion if asked to do so
- Gather and analyse data on the utilisation of the Colleague Support Advisor and use that insight to proactively refine and enhance the role and the perception / visibility of the role within the organisation
Key Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Personable, approachable and be able to quickly build trust in challenging circumstances
- Exceptional communicator with strong influencing skills, enabling them to support colleagues at all levels within the organisation
- As this is a new stand-alone role, the individual will need to be highly driven and pro-active to build out the profile of the role and make it a success
- The individual will need to be discreet, ultimately this role requires a clear separation of duties compared to the wider Employee Relations team
- Possess outstanding judgment to support colleagues whilst also constantly balancing the duty of care an organisation has to it colleagues to determine the appropriate the course of action to take
- Experience of managing and resolving conflict (essential)
- Experience of providing advice and guidance on HR related matters (essential)
- Proven track record of supporting colleagues with mental health issues (desirable)
- Detailed knowledge of employment legislation/ employee relations experience (desirable)
- Mediation experience (desirable)
- Coaching or counselling experience / qualification (desirable)
- Experience of building capability in a particular topic (desirable)
- A CIPD qualification is advantageous as is a relevant mediation/coaching qualification
