Job Summary:

This position will be responsible for providing career development and career planning support for graduate students, professional students, and postdoctoral scholars and fellows at the University of Kentucky. Reporting to the James W. Stuckert Career Center and the University Graduate School, the advisor will focus primarily on coaching for careers outside of academia, with a secondary focus on careers inside academia. The advisor will work collaboratively with the Graduate School s Preparing Future Faculty program to assure a knowledge-based and unified approach to advising for academic positions. The advisor will also work with career development professionals embedded within colleges and with faculty in academic departments to enhance departmental and intra-departmental career development opportunities. The advisor provides direct service to grad students in terms of counseling and coaching them in their search for jobs, fellowships, grants, and other professional opportunities. The advisor will be expected to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for multiculturalism with a commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the delivery of all programs and services.

Primary responsibilities include: individual advising and consultations for students and postdoctoral trainees, feedback and review on résumés/CV s and other career documents that is industry and / or discipline-specific, and developing and presenting career exploratory and preparatory presentations and workshops for specific graduate and professional student populations. The career advisor will serve as a career generalist across multiple academic disciplines and will develop selected materials, services or programs (career forums, workshops, networking events) to help students identify the range of career options and job opportunities congruent with postgraduate academic degrees. The graduate career advisor will work collaboratively with other career advisors in the James W. Stuckert Career Center and the staff of the Graduate Student Professional Enhancement Office and Postdoctoral Affairs Office in the University Graduate School to advance programs and services that diversify graduate career pathways.

Additionally, the graduate career advisor will develop partnerships and work collaboratively with staff from Employer Relations and Community Partnerships in the Stuckert Career Center to expand interactions with business, industry, government, and nonprofit employers to create and increase career-related opportunities and employment connections for graduate and professional students and postdoctoral trainees across academic units. The advisor will also develop close collaboration with career services professionals in the UK Alumni Association in order to support continuity of career services for students as they transition from active enrollment to alumni.

The advisor will be responsible for tracking, assessing, and evaluating efforts supporting graduate and professional student and postdoctoral trainee career planning and transitions. The advisor will provide accurate data collection for student engagement in experiential learning and employment opportunities, e.g., internships, fellowships, co-ops, research, etc., and will create outcome reports; Perform other duties (as assigned by supervisor, campus-wide graduate career advisory group, and/or higher authority) to ensure the success of career services on behalf of UK, the Graduate School, the James W. Stuckert Career Center and its students, postdoctoral
trainees, and alumni.

Skills /Knowledge/Abilities:

Minimum of 4 years of experience working with graduate / professional students; some combination of postgraduate experience in a higher education or academic research setting and / or experience in a corporate / business setting.

Preferred Education/Experience:

Advanced degree in counseling, student personnel, human resources, higher education, communication, business administration, or related field. A Ph.D or Ed.D is preferred.
