Director of Counseling and Psychological Services

Job Description:

The Director is responsible for providing visionary leadership in the administration and operational management of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for a campus of 17,000 students. CAPS provides personal counseling for all undergraduate and graduate students as well as, consulting services and outreach programs for all students, faculty and staff at the University. The Department is fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services.

Provide leadership in the overall management and administration of the Counseling and Psychological Services. The department consists of a mix of masters and doctoral level counselors and social workers and one to four interns.

• Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the central office staff and all non-lFO clinical staff (MAPE, MSUAASF).
• Provide leadership in the management of the central office and student focused mission including work schedules, creation and management of databases and records, ensuring confidentiality and security.
• Provide leadership in the development of department policies, procedures, practices.
• Prepare and administer CAPS annual operating budgets. Provide leadership in seeking additional funding sources, such as grants and gifts to support initiatives and projects.
• Provide leadership in the implementation of innovation of service and delivery methods to respond to changing needs of students and the community.
• Provide leadership in the development and implementation of an on-going assessment and evaluation program.
• Coordinate the development and implementation of a promotion and marketing plan for CAPS services and programs, including development of on-line resources, technology enhancements, and website.
• Provide leadership in the development and implementation of department outreach educational activities.
• Enhance relationships and foster partnerships with a broad base of campus and community stakeholders that result in improved delivery of services and programs that benefit students.
• Provide leadership in the development of collaborative partnerships regarding professional development, programs, services, and outreach.
• Provide leadership in the development of population level interventions which facilitates the overall development of students at SCSU.
• Provide leadership and supervise activities of the Garret Lee Smith Suicide Prevention Grant.
• Provide counseling to students and consult with CAPS members on various clinical management issues.

Assist in providing University leadership in the Behavioral Intervention Team, crisis intervention situations and student emergencies. Serve as a resource and consultant and liaison to the campus community.

Develop and present to various units/departments and campus-wide presentations on relevant topics. Serve as a resource, consultant and liaison to the campus community. Participate in professional development activities and create opportunities for individuals in the department to continue their professional development.

Provide leadership and service for the Division of Student Life and Development and University initiatives. Attend university and division events, representing the department and division. Serve on university and division committees, taskforces, and working groups.

Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, counselor education, or other closely related discipline.
• Licensed, or eligible for license in the state of Minnesota, as Licensed Psychologist (LP), Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPCC).
• Licensure must allow the University to bill insurance for services provided.
• Minimum of five years’ professional experience in a clinical and/or counseling setting.
• Minimum of five years of lead or supervisory work experience in a clinical and/or counseling setting. May be concurrent with professional experience.
• Demonstrated ability to work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds.
• Evidence of ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, administrators, faculty, and external constituents.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Professional experience in a collegiate setting.
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
• Strong organizational skills and strong analytical skills in problem solving;
• Knowledge of current standards of care, college health and medical issues and trends, quality improvement and research in mental health;
• Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention.
