A surgical oncology nurse clinician is a professional registered nurse with surgery-specific clinical knowledge who provides safe therapeutic care in holistic and systematic way. He/she facilitates and oversees the care delivery for patients under the direction of the surgical oncology department manager and in collaboration with the physicians, navigating the patient through the care continuum. The surgical oncology nurse clinician is responsible for the care of his/her patients, including (but not limited to), evaluating the patient at each clinic visit; management of symptoms related to the patient's surgery; assisting with procedures in the clinic; educating the patient about pre-op procedures and post-op management; working with other disciplines (e.g. medical oncology, radiation oncology) and team members (e.g. intake coordinator, surgical scheduling) to ensure the patient receives the proper diagnostic evaluation and treatment in a timely manner. The duties will include a rotation between phone symptom management/coordination and clinic patient support on an alternating schedule with other nurses in the clinic.
