Assistant Teaching Professor, DRAMA-Theater Design and Technology
Syracuse University
Job Description: The Syracuse University Department of Drama seeks to hire an Assistant Teaching Professor for its Theater Design and Technology Program. This is a non-tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2021. Primary expertise should be in scenic design and digital technology, with additional expertise in production in a variety of performance venues and styles. Additional expertise in other entertainment design genres such as corporate theater, theme parks, and events is highly desired. The department seeks candidates whose personal and professional experience, teaching, and creative activity contribute to the advancement of equity, aesthetic diversity, and cultural wealth. Successful candidates will enhance the department's capacity to both honor and cultivate the contributions of those communities that have historically been under-represented or underserved in theater training and/or the theatrical profession. The Department offers conservatory-style training and an unparalleled level of integration with a professional theater: Syracuse Stage, the leading professional theater company of central New York. Consistently ranked among the top programs in the country, the department is committed to the development of a curriculum that responds effectively to the technical and artistic needs of an ever-changing profession, and which prepares a diverse array of students to assume leadership roles. The position will teach a variety of courses as assigned by the Chair and based upon expertise. Additionally, the position will serve as designer for department productions and as both academic and design advisor to student designers in all areas of theatrical design (sets, lights, costumes), guiding them in the creation and realization of professional quality theatrical designs in accordance with emerging best professional practices. Continued professional development in emerging fields of theater design and technology, as well as service and committee work for the Department, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the University is expected.
