Genetic Counselor - Oncology Program

Job Summary:

Responsible for providing genetics counseling services for patients and families with potential or proven genetic disorders. Provides independent assessment and counseling for patients and families with potential or proven genetic disorders across multiple specialties. Provides genetic counseling services via telemedicine consults with other Baptist Health hospitals in the system. This position will coordinate testing and communication of results to patients and referring healthcare providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical

• Reviews and interprets medical records, test results, and other relevant information.
• Provides patient consultation including risk assessment, risk evaluation, medical management and testing options.
• Obtains detailed family history and constructs and interprets pedigrees.
• Addresses psychosocial needs of patients and families related to genetic testing and interpretation.
• Identifies hereditary cancer syndromes, hereditary cardiac syndromes, and perinatal genetic syndromes.
• Coordinates genetic testing and communicates results to patient and referring provider.
• Counsels patients and family members through critical decision points and interpretation of test results.
• Identifies and implements referrals to community resources when appropriate.
• Describes options for surveillance, prevention and early detection.
• Identifies patients appropriate for surveillance through Cancer Risk Management Clinic and supports clinic as needed
• Develops and maintains patient records in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
• Provides communication with referring healthcare providers, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
• Participates in marketing activities related to the program and establishing relationships with key physicians.
• Participates in Oncology Tumor Board and Multidisciplinary Oncology Service Meetings.
• Responsible for reporting on genetic counseling program to Breast Program Committee and Cancer Committee and provides support for standards needed to maintain Cancer Center accreditations.
