Summary Of Position: The Director of Counseling Services provides visionary and instrumental leadership for mental health services at Elon and the provision of quality psychological interventions, outreach, and consultation services to address the emotional, social, and academic needs of Elon University students. Counseling Services is a dynamic unit located within the Ellington Center for Health and Wellness that is part of the Division of Student Life and an integral partner in the university’s wellness and wellbeing initiatives. The director reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students and services as a member of the Student Life Divisional Leadership Team, the university-wide Council on Wellness and Well-Being, and the university Behavioral Intervention Team. The director plays a key leadership role in strengthening connections between Counseling Services and other departments across the university and the Division of Student Life through the coordination of services and activities that support the wellness and well-being of all Elon students. Education Requirements: Completed master's degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, clinical social work, counselor education, or other closely related discipline; earned doctorate from in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, clinical social work, counselor education, or other closely related discipline is highly preferred – APA- or CACREP-accredited programs preferred. Special Skills Or Experience: Experience with direct clinical and administrative supervision of professional staff Demonstrated ability to support and successfully attain institutional goals and objectives with respect to wellness and wellbeing and clinical services Demonstrated transformational leadership skills Intercultural competence and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion Ability to articulate a vision and take steps necessary to actualize organizational goals Strong skills with administrative writing, interpersonal communication, and presenting Demonstrated experience building partnerships and relating effectively with diverse constituents including students, faculty, senior staff, parents, alumni, trustees, and leaders in the profession Experience with staff supervision and development, strategic planning, assessment and evaluation, and data-driven decision making Effective crisis and risk management skillsProficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and electronic EMR. Proficiency in Elon University approved computer system. Proficiency in ELM and FEEDS systems Full Time/Part Time: Full-Time Regular Degree/Major: counseling psychology, clinical psychology, clinical social work, counselor education, or other closely related discipline; Licensure as an independent mental health provider (or immediately eligible) in North Carolina Length Of Experience: 5-7 years of progressive post-master's experience in college mental health services, at least three years of which were in an administrative/leadership capacity or role. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Departmental and Administrative Oversight
Provide effective leadership for Counseling Services, guided by a mission and vision consistent with the mission, goals, and priorities of the university and the Division of Student Life Ensure the effective delivery of clinical counseling services that adhere to the highest professional standards and best practices for college and university counseling services, including individual and group therapy, educational workshops, professional consultations, outreach programming, and crisis intervention and management Oversee the administration and coordination of resources and activities of the department, including monitoring clinical services provided by the department; identification and attainment of service offerings and objectives; program evaluation, and development of clinical policies, procedures, and scope of care Establish and implement departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures Provide direct oversight for the Counseling Services budget; includes monitoring the budget, preparation and submission of the annual budget and long-term planning documents/proposals Supervise, recruit, hire, train, and assess the job performance of assigned staff; includes developing training experiences and supervision strategies that provide the skills, knowledge, and dispositions required to effectively meet established goals and objectives Develop and implement effective departmental meeting and communication structures Serve as primary spokesperson for Counseling Services Provide direct clinical services, including initial assessments, individual and group therapy, crisis management, consultations and referral services to Elon University students utilizing brief therapy modalities Provide reasoned leadership, communication and direction in dealing with students who present a danger to themselves and/or others and shares necessary communication when ethically and legally appropriate Oversee the coordination and operations of the crisis counselor on call system (Protocall)Strategic and Collaborative Leadership
Provide sustained and visible campus leadership for mental health and wellness and contribute to a culture of well-being through collaborative campus and community partnerships Design opportunities to train faculty and staff about mental health and wellness and supporting students personal and academic success Maintain collaborative campus relationships with key campus units to provide outreach and prevention services for students and ensure a positive student experience (Student Health Services, Student Care and Outreach, Residence Life, Academic Affairs, Athletics, etc.) Maintain strong professional and operational relationships with external providers for referral and networking Participate in campus mental health policy formation and program development Regularly assess and communicate the impact and effectiveness of departmental services and programs Respond to inquiries and provide consultation to parents, faculty, staff, students and other university stakeholders Build diversity competence by actively supporting an inclusive climate within the Division of Student Life and the Elon University communityOther Duties
Contribute to Student Life and University strategic planning, goal setting, and priority completion Serve on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees, including the Student Life Divisional Leadership Team, the university Council on Wellness and Well-Being, and the university Behavioral Intervention Team Ensure full compliance with the NC Mental Health Law and any other applicable federal or district regulation, including maintaining confidential client records and data and all NC Licensure requirements for multidisciplinary staff Other related duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Some evening and weekend work required.Additional Information: Licensure as an independent mental health provider (or immediately eligible) in North Carolina |
