Job Description:

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Life
Supervises: Director- Disability Support Services, Assistant Director- Student Access and Support Services (SASS), Case managers, Student workers

Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Life, Associate Dean of Students, is responsible for providing a strong model of student retention, and overseeing Disability Services, CARE team, and Student Access and Support Services. The Associate Dean will provide senior leadership in the Division of Student Life (DSL) and across the College with both faculty and staff in order to create strategies that assist Mills students achieving their goals and graduating from Mills. The Associate Dean of Students supports the goals of the Division of Student Life and the College, as well as the College's Strategic Plan by developing and implementing programs and services that support the education, retention and engagement of our students. This position will be the primary liaison to faculty on student support concerns in collaboration with the Associate Provost for Student Success and Undergraduate Education. Additionally, this position is the staff member responsible for student concerns and divisional needs in the absence of the Dean of Students and serving in an on-call duty rotation.

Essential Job Functions:

Serve as a leader in the Division in Student Life to create a strong model of retention, including coordinating with division and campus partners, direct student services, and collecting, analyzing and reviewing data and serving on the campus wide retention task force.
Hire, evaluate, and supervise staff in the areas of accessibility and accommodations; oversee the application of ADA requirements, academic and other accommodations, and compliance with state and federal law
Lead student support initiatives focus on retention with a primary focus in crisis management.
Oversee the SASS components of the Administrative Leave process and work closely with the Provost and the VP of Enrollment Services in the execution of the leaves including the collection of exit interviews and data collection.
Lead, in collaboration with the Dean of Students, the work of emergency response and preparedness as it relates to students.
Address student concerns and complaints and support HR in the function of the formal grievance process primarily as it relates to grievances against students population and assist with staff and faculty grievance investigation as appropriates; assist in educating the campus community about conflict resolution and in collaboration with the College Title IX officer, educate the campus community and provide student support.
Lead initiatives to meet the needs of students in crisis including serving as chair of the Student Care Team and liaison with faculty as the point person for all students of concern and supervising letters of consideration.
Serve as the primary back up for the Dean of Students on-call duty for the Division of Student Life as part of the Crisis Response Team.
Stay current on issues related to social justice and multi-cultural competence, as well as student development and retention.
Oversee efforts to support students with accessibility and disability accommodations, testing and other services including written and website materials in support of these efforts and records keeping within confidential records and databases.
Create policies and procedures, as necessary and in collaboration with campus partners, to support the mission of the Division and of the College.
As a senior member of the Division of Student Life, provide event support for campus-wide and division programs, as needed.
Meet with the Dean to provide information or obtain advice, consultation or support as needed; represent the Dean at meetings and other activities as requested.
Participate in department and division meetings for project planning, policy development and direction setting.
Maintain safe work conditions and comply with established safety policies, practices, procedures, and requirements.
Work closely with the Dean to foster student success, lead the division and collaborate with campus partners to in a broad range of division programs and initiatives, and represent the division to a wide variety of constituents.
Provide professional development opportunities for staff.
Regularly assess programming, learning outcomes and educational initiatives, and write reports.
Take appropriate steps to be compliant with state and federal laws and campus policies.
In collaboration with the Dean, mange new division projects, as needed.

Requirements:

Knowledge of:

Intersectionality in terms of all aspects of diversity including diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of College students.
Student development theory and restorative justice best practices.
Student affairs profession, particularly in a liberal arts college and/or women's college context.
Legal and compliance issues involving discrimination, harassment, Title IX.
Budgeting
Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training.
Computer skills involving databases, spreadsheets, word processing, web based interactive communication, social media and/or other applications utilizing software applicable to the function.
Appropriate methods and strategies to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse and multicultural environment.
Appropriate methods and strategies to promote and sustain the ability of staff members to effectively deliver quality customer service within the context of all aspects of job performance.
Compliance for federal and state law and policies.
Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department, College and Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.

Education and Training:

Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student development or related field; doctorate preferred
5 or more years of progressive experience in higher education

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands:

Work involves week-end and evening availability.
At times, the incumbent will be sitting for long hours and using computers.
Hearing and speaking are required for communication.
Work often requires flexibility in terms of time, and physical demands.
Work occasionally requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
Interruptions and meeting with a variety of people will be required on a regular basis.
There are a number of deadlines and multiple requirements associated with this position, which may cause significant stress.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review).
