Under supervision, the incumbent will assist in performing laboratory bench experiments related to studies using human specimens. The position requires maintaining human specimen inventory; receiving and transferring of specimens, adhering to appropriate protocols and regulations for experiments, and following safe laboratory practices.
Under supervision, the incumbent will assist in processing tissues for immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence and image analysis, capture and quantitate esophageal images on image analysis computer program, measure proteins and RNA by immunoblots, ELISA, and quantitative RT-PCR and assist with analyzing this in the context of EoE disease and normal states. Primary human cell culture will require the use aseptic technique. This position also requires research coordination under the supervision of the PI and primary research team, maintaining clinical databases, attending clinics, and collecting specimens in the endoscopy suite under supervision. Interaction with multiple divisions within Pediatrics as well as nationally is required.
Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as animal physiology, biology, molecular biology, immunology, and biochemistry; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Ability to perform extractions of nucleic acids from blood and biopsy specimens and perform appropriate PCR experiments and analysis including quantitative PCR.
Demonstrated experience with culture of primary human cells.
Excellent computer skills and ability to learn new computer programs. Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook. Ability to perform data entry and basic graphing with statistical analysis.
Ability to perform standard laboratory techniques (pipetting, weighing). Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability to follow experimental protocols.
Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories and clinical settings. Courteous, respectful of co-worker and maintain a safe and collegiate workplace environment.
Excellent organizational skills for clinical record keeping.
Knowledge of or experience performing immunohistology and image analysis using both immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques on frozen and archived biopsy specimens.
Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Knowledge and skill in operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, and PCR thermocyclers.
Interest in understanding the pathogenesis of human disease. Willingness to learn new lab techniques and tasks and share knowledge of such.
Thorough knowledge of or experience using aseptic techniques.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, and to effectively document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
Past experience with human tissue and cell work and with clinical coordination especially in the context of human allergic or gastrointestinal diseases.
