Summary of Position: Reporting to the Director of the Center for Student Leadership, Equity and Excellence, The Coordinator for Student Leadership assists in the advancement of college retention goals by fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus life through student advising and leadership development. The incumbent will work collaboratively with departments across the institution to enhance the academic experience and strengthen student involvement. The Coordinator for Student Leadership is expected to maintain a visible presence on campus and to be actively engaged in the development and maintenance of student clubs and organizations. The incumbent promotes student and organizational excellence and best practices grounded in student development theory.
Essential Job Functions Includes but not limited to:
Oversee the student club and organize registration process by providing on-going mentorship and leadership development to clubs and organizations in collaboration with primary staff and faculty advisors.
Create and implement a faculty and staff advisor training
Update and maintain the Student Clubs and Organization Handbook
Ensure that all registered student organizations understand and adhere to college policies with regard to student club/organization recognition and day-to-day business.
Create and implement leadership development opportunities and experiences for students that are philosophically rooted in the Social Change Model
Cultivate community service leadership opportunities in Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area communities
Co-advise (with the Director) the Associated Students of Mills College (ASMC) including but not limited to attending weekly board meetings, scheduling bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with Executive Board members, and providing oversight to the use and allocation of ASMC funds.
Provide on-going leadership training for ASMC Executive Board Members and Senators
Advise Senior Class Council
Assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive training for Orientation Leaders.
Create and assess student learning outcomes for the programmatic areas.
Be available to students via regularly scheduled office hours and regular contact with the Mills community.
Create reports and publications as required, e.g., operations, programming, assessment, and administrative reports.
Represent the department on Student Life, campus-wide, and departmental committees as assigned.
Supervise student workers in office and programming tasks and participate in the hiring, training, and evaluation.
Responsible for a thorough knowledge of applicable policies, regulations, and laws, including those of the legally authorized governing body; monitors compliance with and provides guidance regarding such policies, regulations, and law
Assist the Director in the assessment of learning outcomes and effectiveness of services and programs provided by the Center for Student Leadership, Equity, and Excellence. Participate in Division-wide meetings and committees.
Manage budgets for areas of responsibility including expenses, forecasting and concur submissions.
Perform related duties as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:
Knowledge of and practice engaging in social justice work regarding power and privilege dynamics
Knowledge and experience of current practices and theories in student affairs in higher education, including student leadership/student development.
Ability to develop programs and activities that encourage student success and maximize student retention;
Experience in developing programs and activities that encourage student success; ability to lead collaborative groups; demonstrated presentation and project management skills; demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; multicultural competence and computer literacy are required.
Ability to work independently and with good judgment to manage a complex job involving ambiguous tasks, multiple responsibilities, and an irregular and unpredictable schedule.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and written/verbal communication skills with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently and develop strong relationships with students, staff, and faculty, interact at all levels with campus and community constituents and stakeholders.
Ability to effectively and creatively use technology.
Experience working with diverse populations and a demonstrated understanding of the issues faced by students who are members of underrepresented groups
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Education and Training:
Bachelor's required, Master's degree in relevant field preferred
1-2 years of professional experience with some experience in student leadership and/or student development.
Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
Standing for long periods of time (2-3 times per academic year, particularly during Orientation, Convocation, and Commencement).
Occasionally work outdoors, depending on programming, possibly in inclement weather.
Work primarily involves sitting for long hours and using office equipment.
The incumbent will often spend long hours on the computer answering emails.
Work often requires bending to adjust or work with office equipment.
Work occasionally requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 40 pounds.
The incumbent will be located in a busy, open office area. Interruptions and meeting with a variety of people will be required on a regular basis.
There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress.
Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Hourly Rate is commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review). Staff members also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period.
