The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is part of the Sharp HealthCare System, which is a not-for-profit integrated regional health care delivery system based in San Diego, California. Residents are hired and the program is accredited and conducted from the Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, and the residents will have the opportunity to rotate through various adjunct Sharp Healthcare Hospital sites to further enrich his or her learning experience. This ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice (PGY1) residency provides opportunity for residents to enhance their ability to provide effective pharmaceutical care in multiple diverse patient care settings. Also, this program enables the resident to improve communication and leadership skills with health care professionals, pharmacy students, and patients. Core learning experiences include: critical care, infectious disease, medicine (telemetry and surgical), practice management & administration, safe medication practice, and emergency medicine. Elective learning experiences include: trauma, NICU, nutritional & metabolic support, oncology, solid organ transplant, psychiatry, specialty pharmacy, and many more. Residents work under the mentorship of pharmacy resident advisors and preceptors. In addition, residents are active participants in the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, as well as other committees as necessary. Residents will participate in the San Diego Pharmacy Residency Leadership (SDPRL) teaching certification program. This county-wide program includes activities such as preceptor development and workshops, and residents will receive a teaching certificate upon completion of the program. Residents participate in the development of their own residency plan, which reflects their interest and builds upon their previous experiences. Upon successful completion of our program, the resident will be equipped with the knowledge to become an asset to the pharmacy community. Applicants must possess or be eligible for a Pharm.D. degree and must be self-motivated with good interpersonal and communication skills. Completion of California licensure exams (CPJE, NAPLEX) is strongly recommended before the first day of residency.
