George Mason University (“Mason”) seeks a seasoned and innovative leader to serve as its next Executive Director, Auxiliary Services (“ED”). Located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and known for its entrepreneurial spirit and rapid emergence, Mason is one of the most remarkable success stories in the past half-century of American higher education.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Business Services, Bill Dracos, the ED oversees dining and food service operations, as well as the Mason Card Program and Business Technology Services. The ED negotiates and manages the external contract with Sodexo as well as independent tenant vendors, providing service to approximately 37,000 students, as well as approximately 2,600 faculty and 2,500 staff across three campuses in the metropolitan D.C. and Northern Virginia area.
Mason seeks an ED who will be a thoughtful leader and strategic advisor for important University auxiliary services decisions. The new ED must be a creative and visionary leader who excels at customer service, community engagement, and responsiveness, and is focused on continuous improvement and innovation. The successful candidate will be an inspirational leader with a track record of providing strategic direction in a vibrant and diverse organization of similar size, scale, and complexity. This individual will bring innovative revenue generation ideas along with strong operations, contract management, and leadership skills within higher education or a similarly complex corporate setting. Candidates should possess outstanding oral and written communication skills, along with the interpersonal skills to build relationships of trust and credibility with a wide range of students and colleagues, and a propensity for collaboration. Significant experience in and knowledge of dining and food service operations in a large-scale and multifaceted environment is required.
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field and at least 15 years of experience, with at least seven to 10 years of experience in appropriate leadership positions. Experience in higher education or similar organizations preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
