In addition to the general duties and responsibilities set forth in the Faculty/Staff Handbook, the specific duties and responsibilities of the School Counselor are as follows:
1. Provides short term individual and/or group counseling to enhance learner development. 2. Conducts structured sessions, using group and/or individual techniques, that are appropriate to the identified educational and personal/social/ goals and that meet the needs and abilities of learners. 3. Provides individual and/or group counseling responsive services for learners in need of support. 4. Selects appropriate materials and curriculum resources to enhance the individual and/or group process. 5. Provides developmental, preventative, and/or responsive guidance for individuals, small groups, and whole class groups to assist learners. 6. Assists learners in the development of educational and personal/social competencies. 7. Provides resources and information to assist learners. 8. Selects appropriate materials and curriculum resources to enhance the guidance activities. 9. Consults with teachers, parents, administrators and others as appropriate to meet learner needs. 10. Participates and/or facilitates conferences with teachers, learners, and parents to address learner academic and/or behavioral issues/needs. 11. Works with teachers to develop appropriate strategies to meet learner needs. 12. Work with teachers and parents to develop plans that will assist learners. 13. Identifies appropriate community resources, in consultation with parents, to address the special needs of individual learners and serves as a liaison between the school and such resources. 14. Assesses the needs of the learners, parents, school, and community. 15. Identifies standards/benchmarks to address targeted needs. 16. Attends staff development programs. 17. Updates skills and knowledge. 18. Completes appropriate documentation of services provided to learners. 19. Participates in, coordinates and/or conducts activities which promote a safe and positive school climate. 20. Coordinates school-wide affective education programs. 21. Assists in conducting orientation activities for learners and parents. 22. Meets with parents of incoming age two- and three-year old students before the start of school to discuss separation anxiety and a strategies for mitigation. 23. Facilitates articulation activities, including but not limited to advising upper school families on middle school options and completion of middle school recommendation documents and transmittal of official school records. 24. Serves as the school’s testing chairperson and oversees all aspects of annual standardized testing programs; works with teachers and parents to interpret test scores and make recommendations. 25. Conducts workshops for teachers, parents, administrators and others as appropriate to meet learner needs. 26. Performs program related work as required or as assigned by the Head of School or his/her designee.
Minimum Position Requirements
1. A Master’s degree or higher and state certification in school guidance counseling. 2. Five years previous experience as an elementary or middle school counselor or combined experience as a teacher/counselor at the elementary or middle school level. 3. Successful completion of Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Background Screening. 4. Ability to relate with and speak to parents and students in a respectful and courteous manner. 5. Willing to work in a team environment; be willing to share ideas & be open to other’s ideas; be flexible & willing to compromise. 6. Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally. 7. Some fluency in a second language is a plus. 8. Competence with basic instructional technology functions, including but not limited to: M.S. Outlook email & calendar; M.S. Word, Excel, & PowerPoint; web-browsing; apps; large-screen interactive devices, such as Smart or Aquos Boards; social media platforms; etc.
Special Requirements and Physical Demands
This is sedentary work which requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing and visual acuity. The work is performed primarily indoors.
