Rutgers University – Newark, is an urban public research anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Senior EOF Counselor for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOF) within the Academic Foundations Center (AFC) which will report to the Assistant Dean of Counseling.
The Senior EOF Counselor duties include but are not limited to: -Assisting in the programmatic development and implementation of the EOF Program, and assuring successful levels of academic achievement and graduation for an assigned caseload of Rutgers University – Newark undergraduate students. -Providing orientation to the campus culture as well as academic, career, financial aid, and personal counseling. -Serving as a liaison and maintains contact with faculty, school academic advisors, residence life, student life, financial aid, student accounting, registrar's office, admissions office, the Learning Resource and Writing Centers, and other internal and external special programs. -Developing, initiating, and administering special projects and services for the summer program's academic component and specified EOF populations to promote leadership, holistic growth, and achievement. -Conducting outreach on behalf of EOF students with outside community constituents, agencies, and schools. -Teaching a credit-bearing course during the summer bridge program and during the academic year that focuses on strategies for academic success. Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a master's degree, preferably in social work or counseling psychology, and two years of related experience working in higher education. Also requires excellent communication skills and a working knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, FileMaker Pro and Blackboard or similar course management programs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires expert knowledge of non-traditional college students coupled with the ability to implement academic support and effective support to the same. - Experience in these areas as well as developing and conducting academic support workshops coupled with strong writing, analytical, and presentation skills are also required. - Requires experience in and/or willingness to work with diverse cultures and backgrounds. - Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. - Must also be able to assess the program participants in terms of the areas prescribed by the EOF program.
- Masters degree, preferably in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field. - Two years experience with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Beyond Microsoft Office (or similar) software the SSS Counselor of Special Programs will likely use Blackboard (or similar) software as well as FileMaker Pro (or similar) data base software. - The use of additional applications may be needed as the program evolves and the distance counseling functions are developed.
