The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology.
The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Under supervision, the incumbent provides support to post-doctoral researchers and graduate students on projects investigating cellular transport. The incumbent will independently perform duties including managing lab organization, ordering reagents, troubleshooting maintenance issues, and maintaining common lab supplies. Performs other related duties as required.
Theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Demonstrated experience performing plasmid design and manipulation using PCR and modern molecular cloning methods.
Demonstrated experience maintaining and passaging cell lines and primary cells in tissue culture using sterile techniques.
Experience and working knowledge to prepare cell-culture samples for Mass Spectrometry and analyze mass spectrometry data.
Proven knowledge of how to make stable cell lines using a number of different methods including the commercial FRT system as well as new gene editing methods, like CRISPR.
Prior experience in general laboratory equipment including spectrophotometers, centrifuges, balances, autoclaves, and pH meters.
Proven ability to proactively maintain an organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and media, purchase new equipment, and ensure lab equipment is operating effectively Ability to follow and troubleshoot established lab protocols and procedures.
Proficient experience in working with computers word processing, spreadsheet, and internet programs.
Knowledge of proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials. Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability in using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Ability to work as part of a research team and interact effectively with collaborating labs and others in scientific community, maintaining good working relationships with all members of the research groups.
