The Runstad Department of Real Estate in the College of Built Environments has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time Academic Adviser position. The Runstad Department of Real Estate was established in 2017 with a focus on training professionals who will contribute to developing, financing and managing housing, retail, and commercial spaces in our cities and communities. The Department offers a minor in real estate, which was launched in 2018 and currently serves approximately 50 students; a Master’s of Science in Real Estate (MSRE), which serves approximately 40 students; and in January 2021 will launch a new Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in real estate. It is expected that the new BS degree will initially enroll 40 students a year and grow to 80 students or more.
The Academic Advisor’s primary function will be to provide academic advising to prospective and current students, but the Adviser will also provide programmatic and administrative support to all undergraduate and graduate Real Estate programs. Additionally, the Advisor with have a unique opportunity to help establish the new major’s culture, processes, and student support activities. This position has the potential to evolve as the programs continue to grow and as additional student services are needed. Academic Advising •Provide one-on-one meetings with current students to assist in the selection of courses, course sequencing, programmatic activities; answer inquiries by email, phone, online, or in person •Meet and advise prospective students on undergraduate and graduate Real Estate programs, including admissions processes, program requirements, application deadlines, and funding opportunities •Manage the admission process for undergraduate and graduate programs; review and process application forms •Provide regular drop-in advising hours •Advise students who experience academic hardships and make referrals to appropriate campus resources when necessary •Work with the Registrar’s Office and other units on campus to help students resolve problems appropriately •Provide career counseling and help students identify and connect with internships or other professional mentoring opportunities •Manage communication with students, including through email and social media, and respond to student inquiries •Coordinate with other academic advisors within the College of Built Environments, with key program coordinators and other campus advisors, and with other campus units as necessary to provide holistic advising services
Programmatic and Administrative Responsibilities •Ensure that paper and electronic documents pertinent to the undergraduate and graduate programs (including brochures, web material, on-line forms, etc.) are kept up to date through coordination with CBE Communications •Support outreach and recruitment efforts for the department, particularly for prospective students from groups currently underrepresented in our program, college, and field •Create partnerships with local area schools, youth programs, and professional organizations to advertise and promote Real Estate programs •Promptly respond to email and in-person requests from students, faculty, and staff •Collect and analyze data related to admissions, enrollment, program performance and other benchmarks identified by the department
Events •Organize and conduct information sessions to advertise and promote Real Estate programs for UW students and potential transfer students •Organize orientation sessions for incoming and returning students •Help arrange graduation activities and other special events in coordination with the department and the college
REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor's degree in the social sciences, built environments, business or related fields. •Three years experience in a professional environment. •Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail •Demonstrated verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills •Experience and desire to work with a diverse group of people and experiences •Dependable and responsible with the ability to problem solve, make independent decisions based on department or university policy and guidelines, balance multiple tasks, and manage complex workloads with frequent interruptions •Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in teams •Capacity to adapt and apply technology and information systems •Polite, professional, and sensitive to the needs of other employees and students
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Experience working with students in an academic or instructional environment •One year advising and recruitment experience on UW campus and experience using the UW-specific advising systems including DARS and the student database •Knowledge of UW organizations, services, and resources relative to the student experience •Experience working and communicating successfully with faculty and administrators •Interest in and/or experience with the real estate profession broadly defined
WORK CONDITIONS: •Working irregular hours is common during certain times of the academic year, especially during the start of the quarter and when deadlines are imminent •This position is expected to respond promptly to email and in-person requests from students, faculty and staff •May be required to travel to recruitment events
