The Financial Counselor, under general supervision, provides patients, physicians, eligibility vendors and internal hospital personnel with information regarding charity care programs and hospital payment requirements for scheduled and unscheduled services. The Financial Counselor exhibits a high level of empathy with the ability to effectively communicate with patients and family members during traumatic events, while demonstrating exceptional customer service skills. The Financial Counselor researches financial questions/issues on customer accounts, using analytical skills to ensure appropriate action is taken to resolve the account in a timely manner and has exceptional technical knowledge of all aspects of Access Services and the Central Business Office and is able to interpret specialized communications/documents from a variety of sources. In addition, the Financial Counselor calculates and collects all patient liability due according to BSW Financial Clearance Policies related to existing and/or bad debt accounts for scheduled and in-house patients and coordinates with the eligibility vendor on uninsured inpatients who may be eligible for Medicaid or other State funding.
The ideal Financial Counselor candidate will have excellent collection skills with proven results along with general insurance terminology (Medicare, Medicaid and managed care), basic knowledge of medical terminology, proficient typing and keyboarding skills, basic computer skills and Microsoft Office and works independently and self-starter.
