Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE) is an educational leader in areas such as advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. Roughly eight hundred full-time students are enrolled in our degree programs, including approximately 250 Master of Sciences students. These students are supported by a collaborative team of 35 faculty and 25 staff.
We seek a dynamic individual to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering's academic team to provide academic advising, coaching, and mentoring to approximately 150 full-time Masters of Sciences students many of whom are international students. Our advisors work closely with our students to help them navigate their Carnegie Mellon degree program and to encourage and support them as they strive to achieve their academic and career goals. In addition to advising, the successful candidate will work closely with a team of faculty and staff across the entire graduate student lifecycle from recruiting and admission processes to graduation; the person will also play an important role in community building through the development of events and programming. This position will support approximately 150 of the 250 full-time Mechanical Engineering MS students with the remainder being supported by the Manager of MS Programs.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: advising and counseling full-time research and coursework MS students concerning academic progress and other issues; manage academic status; certification of degree completion; assisting with academic and co-curricular events and programming to facilitate community and cohort building of a diverse student body; and supporting the MS admission process including recruitment, application review, and enrollment.
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required. College level course work in academic advising or closely related area is preferred.
Previous experience advising or working experience with college or graduate students is preferred. Experience working with international students is preferred.
