Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Otolaryngology Research Associate assists in performing research and laboratory work by performing various research procedures including small animal surgeries for various imaging experiments. Record observations related to these research experiments. Organize and maintain mouse colonies. Prepare and section tissue samples using cryostat. Stain various tissues using immunohistochemical techniques. Keep accurate and updated records of experiments and present the results and data in lab meetings. Order and maintain lab equipment and supplies as needed. Maintain a functional clean, safe and orderly lab environment. Train new lab personnel. Assist in scheduling and organizing studies with various collaborators. Overall, this position will be ideal for those who seek to refine their technical skills and build their publication record.
Theoretical knowledge in a field related to hearing research with one year of expertise in inner ear research. Related fields may include any of the following fields of study: Neuroscience, Molecular biology, immunology, and/or biochemistry.
Laboratory experience in molecular biology, immunology, and/or tissue culture techniques and demonstrated skill in operating and maintaining various lab equipment, such as confocal and quantitative fluorescent microscopes, RT-PCR, cryostat, and flow cytometer. Experience in working with animal and/or human inner ear tissues will be advantageous. Some of these skills may be learned on the job.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment. Demonstrated experience with the operation of a personal computer and various software applications and packages, such as MS Word and Excel Graphpad and Adobe.
Demonstrated experience working with animal and human tissues.

Ability to coordinate studies with the lab and other departments. Demonstrated skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.

Ability to coordinate studies and work assignments within the lab and with other collaborators in an efficient and productive manner.
Excellent organizational and time management skills. Experience with general lab maintenance, including lab equipment maintenance, preparing solutions and reagents, ordering and restocking supplies. Experience working and maintaining a sterile environment. Knowledge of radiation safety and bio-safety techniques and practices. Experience working with chemical, and biological hazards and recognizing safety problems.
Laboratory experience in molecular biology, immunology and tissue culture techniques. Ability to work in a laboratory setting and knowledge of laboratory operations and procedures. Ability to prepare solutions and reagents.
Experience with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies. Experience working and maintaining a sterile environment. Order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.
Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research: Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and to assist in the writing of papers for publication and research proposals.
Experience in inner ear research.
Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements.
Ability to write with correct syntax and grammar to clearly communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S.
