The Medical Student Counseling Center in the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine serves approximately 700 medical and physician assistant students. The Center provides counseling services and outreach programs to enhance medical and physician assistant students’ mental health and well-being, fostering personal, academic and career success in a confidential and safe environment. The Center is committed to professionalism, excellence, and creating an inclusive community within the Carver College of Medicine.
Address psychological/mental health needs of medical and physician assistant students through individual, group and/or couples counseling. Offer individual and group career guidance. Collaborate with Learning Specialist as needed to support student academic success. Develop and implement outreach programming aimed at improving students’ well-being including coordinating suicide prevention and gatekeeper training programs, the monthly Mental Health Matters newsletter, and the Peer Mentor Program. Complete disability accommodations intakes and take part in coordinating accommodations. Advocate for the needs of students from a range of diverse groups within the healthcare enterprise. Collaborate with other mental health professionals in planning and providing services. Consult with administrators, faculty and staff in supporting students. Participate in OSAC-sponsored activities and serve on committees as assigned. Participate in learning community and student outreach activities to promote the counseling unit in the student population. Occasional weekend or evening hours required for some special events programming.
1) Counseling and Assessment: Determine and address emotional and behavioral needs of medical and physician assistant students through individual, group and/or couples counseling. Manage emergent crises. Facilitate prevention efforts aimed at enhancing psychological health and well-being.
2) Disability Accommodations: Coordinate disability accommodations for assigned qualifying students, as determined by the Disability Accommodations Committee, in accordance with federal law.
3) Career Counseling: Provide individual career guidance. Create and implement career development and decision-making workshops. Collaborate with faculty to provide information and mentorship on specialty selection and residency match. Develop initiatives to supplement the Careers in Medicine program provided to students by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Serve as instructor for Career Life Planning elective.
4) Outreach: Promote Medical Student Counseling Center services to students and provide information about services to members of the Carver College of Medicine/ UIHC community and external constituencies. Offer psycho-educational programming for students designed to improve wellbeing and support mental health. Coordinating suicide prevention programming and provide QPR gatekeeper training. Develop and oversee publication of a monthly Mental Health Matters newsletter. Coordinate the Peer Mentor Program. Participate in activities, events, and committees as a representative of the Medical Student Counseling Center and as a member of the Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum.
5) Advocacy: Demonstrate competency in working with students, faculty and staff from a full range of diverse groups. Respond to student concerns on both an individual and systemic level and offer appropriate resources. Contribute to building and sustaining a culturally sensitive and responsive learning environment through personal reflection and professional development; individual, group, and community interactions; and assessment of counseling center policies and practices.
6) Consultation: Collaborate with other mental health professionals in planning and providing services and making appropriate referrals. Assist administrators, faculty and staff in meeting the needs of students while maintaining essential professional boundaries.
Design and present psycho-educational sessions for students enrolled in the Introduction to Medical Education at Iowa program.
Develop, implement, and monitor curricula for faculty advisors aimed at enhancing their general and career counseling skills (workshops, written materials, etc.)
Develop, implement and monitor curricula aimed at enhancing medical students’ psychological health and well-being (stress management, balancing family and career, maintaining relationships, substance use, gender-based concerns, etc.
In conjunction with College of Medicine, University and National resources and organizations, work with the director to develop, disseminate, and update College of Medicine policies, protocols, and guidelines regarding medical and physician assistant student mental health. Provide information to internal and external constituencies on responding to academic and mental health needs of professional students. Serve on pertinent committees as assigned.

A master’s or doctoral degree or equivalent education and experience in counseling psychology, counseling, counselor education, or related field is required. A Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology or a closely related field is desirable. The successful candidate must be licensed or license eligible in the state of Iowa as a psychologist, mental health counselor, or mental health professional in a closely related field. Possession of a valid State of Iowa mental health provider license is required at time of hire, except for Psychologists who must obtain a license within 12 months of hire date. License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment in addition to degree specified.
1) Reasonable, independent experience (1-3 years) working as a psychologist, professional counselor or mental health professional in a closely related field.
2) Experience serving a college or graduate student population – providing counseling, academic advising, career guidance and/or outreach programs.
3) Demonstrated skill at building and maintaining helping relationships – counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, and/or supervision.
4) Demonstrated skill at building and maintaining collaborative, collegial relationships – teamwork and leadership.
5) Expertise in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning; and the capacity to implement therapeutic interventions.
6) Evidence of a commitment to diversity and competence in working with a range of people from diverse groups.
