The Dean is the chief administrative officer of the College of Education. As such, the Dean collaborates with the faculty and staff of the College in the management of the College's teaching, research, and service activities as well as oversees academic programs and fiscal affairs within the College. Further, the Dean is responsible for developing, promoting, and maintaining positive and productive relationships with constituencies external to the College and University. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President.
Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.
The College of Education at Mississippi State University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and is a member of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. The College, the third largest at Mississippi State University, includes the Departments of Counseling, Educational Psychology, & Foundations; Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education; Educational Leadership; Instructional Systems and Workforce Development; Kinesiology; Music, and the Division of Education at the Meridian Campus of Mississippi State University. The research centers include the National Research and Training Center on Blindness and Low Vision; America Reads; Mississippi Migrant Education Service Center; Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute; MSU World Class Teaching Program; the T.K. Martin Center for Technology & Disability; and the Research Institute for Sports Convergence. Currently, the College serves nearly 3000 undergraduate and 800 graduate students with approximately 140 faculty and 100 staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serves as the chief administrative officer responsible for the accomplishment of teaching, research, and service missions of the College. 2. Oversees all academic programs of the College and encourages the faculty to continuously improve the College's undergraduate and graduate academic programs. 3. Fosters an environment conducive to scholarly research appropriate for degree programs in the College. 4. Encourages service activities that are consistent with the mission of the College. 5. Oversees the recruiting, hiring, supervising, and evaluation of personnel within the College, with a commitment to diversity and fairness. 6. Manages the College's budget and resources effectively, transparently, and collaboratively. 7. Works with the faculty and staff in establishing and implementing the mission and strategic plan that will productively guide the teaching, research, and service activities and decision-making of the College. 8. Values and actively encourages faculty and staff involvement in periodic reviews and reassessments of the strategic plan. 9. Develops, fosters, and maintains positive relationships with College stakeholders within the University and with those external to the College. 10. Identifies, develops, and strengthens synergistic relationships with other MSU Colleges and serves as an advocate for the College. 11. Develops and strengthens relationships with Alumni of the College. 12. Serves as the primary spokesperson for the College in interactions with local, state and federal officials and other leaders to promote the missions of the College and enhance its stature. 13. Oversees and participates in major fundraising initiatives and activities of the College to acquire the resources necessary for effective performance of the teaching, research, and service mission of the College. 14. Ensures compliance with all requirements of the College and University accrediting bodies. 15. Performs related duties as assigned.

* An earned doctorate or terminal degree and a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly activity commensurate with a tenured Professor in one of the College's academic departments. * Demonstrated experience in leading and supervising faculty and staff. * Experience in administering a broad range of programs in settings including higher education. * Experience in budgetary and academic affairs. * Experience in securing external funding for research and educational purposes from private, public, and/or non-profit sources.
Administrative experience equivalent to department head or above

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
* No unusual physical requirement. Requires limited lifting of files and records. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. * Frequent - External imposed deadlines set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions that influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis. * Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. * Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically. * Hearing requirements: Ability to hear over the telephone and during presentation.
