Reporting to the Senior Vice Dean for Curriculum and Programs (SVD-CP), the Associate Dean and Dean of Student Affairs, Full-time MBA Programs, ("Dean of Students") is responsible for providing strategic leadership, vision, oversight, and coordination for all services offered for MBA students. The Dean of Students is a key member of the school's senior leadership team and plays a major role in shaping and enhancing the student experience of MBA students. The Dean of Students is responsible for the overall direction of the three areas within Student Affairs: Academics, Student Life, and Operations. The Dean of Students provides strategic direction for all services offered within these areas and initiates, maintains, enhances relationships with other departments and Centers to create and/or support social, professional and community events and programs that benefit the academic needs of our diverse student population.
The Dean of Students also partners with the broader Columbia University community to develop policies that support the visionary goals of CBS Student Affairs and ultimately broaden the learning experience for our students.
Develop the vision, strategic direction and conceptualize all planning for academic affairs and student life. Responsible for driving innovation within academic affairs and student life, and enhancing it through a review process.
Effectively manage and mentor a team of professionals, focusing on professional engagement, development and accountability across the department.
Partner closely with counterparts from Admissions, Financial Aid, Samberg Institute, EMBA and the CMC to create and/or support events and programs for our diverse student population. Directly engage with counterparts to ensure best practice sharing.
Actively develop and maintain strong relationships among faculty, centers/programs, and administrative offices to ensure and foster collaboration for the student experience.
Responsible for ~$5M budget; works closely with the Senior Vice Dean to optimize budget management.
Oversee advising to MBA students; partners with University resources including professional counseling services, public safety, Office of Disability Services, Title IX office, etc. to support students' needs when needed.
Advise and provide administrative oversight for student, faculty and administrative committees; advisor to student organizations. Along with the Director, Student Life and Engagement, administer the Peer Advisor Program.
Advise on club management goals and mentoring activities; review and approve of special events designed for MBA students as needed.
Manage and execute the Dean's Discipline process for academic and behavioral cases. Oversee documentation of cases, maintain case history, and serve as point of contact for students in the process.
Responsible for overall management for grading, exam logistics, delivery of tutoring services, academic course scheduling and compliance with academic standards. Work closely with Senior Vice Dean for Curriculum and Programs, Managing Director of the Samberg Institute for Teaching Excellence, and Director, Academic Affairs to optimize academic course offerings.
Maintain strong relationships with dual/joint degree program affiliates, including SIPA, Law, Teachers College, Engineering, etc., to ensure a positive experience among dual/joint degree students. Identify a means of making dual/joint degree experience as seamless as possible while maintaining a sense of equity among all MBA students.
Engage in key projects as agreed with the Senior Vice Dean. Projects will typically require engagement as a member of the Senior leadership team and will be responsible for the business issues associated with a project that are essential to ensuring the delivery of the project outputs and the attainment of project outcomes. Be seen as a leader among peers to help drive project success.
Represent the Business School, internally and externally, on senior level University committees concerning academic and student affairs.
Other responsibilities as assigned or necessary.
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree strongly desirable. Must possess at least 7+ years of progressive management experience working in higher education, preferably in a role involving student advising and academic affairs in a service driven environment.
Must possess strong, demonstrated leadership skills with highly articulated student development focus, specifically working with a high-volume student population. Superior presentation and engagement skills are required. Superior team skills are required, including group facilitation, conflict mediation, team motivation, team development, etc.
Must be highly effective at communicating verbally and in writing with a variety of constituents, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Must proactively partner with key constituents including members of the Dean's Office to ensure a consistency in vision and strategy.
Experience at a research-level institution preferred. Experience working in highly competitive MBA environments also preferred. Counseling and advising skills strongly preferred.
