Physics at Berkeley is home to faculty who are devoted to scientific discovery and the teaching of future physicists and students, both undergrad and grad, who come to learn and participate in cutting-edge research. The department has the full spectrum of scientists and has growing programs in: biophysics, quantum physics, atomic physics and quantum technologies.

Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
Plans, designs, coordinates and provides workshops for students, information about the campus, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events including: admissions recruitment, job fairs career placement and prospective student outreach.
Liaison to student organizations.
Plans, organizes and implements annual fellowship workshop.
May supervise student staff.
Within an academic department/school/college, provides and makes recommendations for the improvement of the following programs: Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures using seasoned skills.
Provides advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and program requirements.
Assists students in determining academic programs, alternative academic options, resolve scheduling conflicts, and similar issues.
Advises new, continuing, and all prospective students, parents, faculty, staff, and other educational institutions on academic program and College and University requirements making appropriate referrals to campus offices as necessary.
Reviews graduate students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion.
Tracks and evaluates completion of requirements and processes MA degree petition on a semesterly basis.
Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.
Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination, harrassment and mental health matters.
GRADUATE RECRUITMENT AND OUTREACH
Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions and students (URM).
Advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation, appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals.
Evaluates domestic and international applicants' transcripts for admission eligibility.
Initiates and arranges prospective students visits to Berkeley, pre-admissions.
Arrange departmental showcase for the Berkeley Edge Program Fall Graduate Admissions Conference, Diversity Recruitment at Open House.
Provides direct advice and counsel to Dept. Chair, Vice of Instruction, Summer Chair, Head Faculty Adviser and Diversity Coordinator for Physical Sciences, Diversity and Education Outreach Chair, Director of Administration, Campus Compliance Officer, UC Extension and Student Services Supervisor on all matters related to diversity and outreach.
FINANCIAL AID - ASE POSITIONS
Fully responsible for all processes related to equitable assignment of approximately 200 GSIs and 5-10 UGSI per year and coordinates GS/UGSI assignments each term including summers. Plans and implements instructor organizational meetings; recruits representatives from campus such Labor Relations and UHS to present at meetings; analyzes, interprets and implements regulations related to ASE hires; identifies Head GSIs, oversees nomination and selection of Outstanding GSI Awards. Manages GSI compliance reports.
In collaboration with undergraduate SSA3, recruits and hires Reader ASE appoinments based on course enrollments and needs.
Emergency backup for processing, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards.
Advises students on financial aid options on campus and extra-mural fellowship opportunities
INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT, EVENTS AND COURSE SCHEDULING
Back up scheduler for all special events and one time room requests for the Department. Events include but are not limited to midterm reviews, final exams, special talks/lectures, workshops and commencement.
Updates and maintains website information for all matters related to graduate program including but not limited to course curriculum and graduate student handbook.
Recruits and processes hiring of Physics GRE Workshop Lead every fall.
Coordinates, manages and maintains all Graduate Student Instructor office and course center space.
Manage GSI building and office key access including advising insuring safety protocols are met.
Attends and supports Student Services events including Undergraduate Advising at CalDay as well as other department events; assists undergraduate SSA2 and SSA3 on all aspects of events as needed, including Commencement.
Manages all aspects for GSI teaching evaluations.
Advises department/college/school students on the job market process and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study.
Advises on summer internship programs
Develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students.
Serves on department graduate admissions panels and organizes job/career fairs.
Develops and enhances alumni recruitment network
Works with the Unit's Career Adviser (SSA3) to identify and cultivate potential employers
Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
