Under supervision, the incumbent will assist senior researchers in the creation of novel software for visualization and analysis of large-scale human microbiome datasets. In order to achieve this, core components of the infrastructure need to be developed using high-performance and memory-efficient data structures. For novel methodologies, the incumbent will create user-facing documentation and validate user-facing results using unit tests and integration tests.
Theoretical knowledge of microbial ecology, multivariate analysis techniques or an equivalent combination of education and experience in these fields.
Experience working with the scientific python stack in the context of scikit-bio, QIIME2, and Qiita.
Ability to teach and learn about novel analytical techniques.
Demonstrated experience using Jupyter notebook.
Ability to use computer software for bioinformatic analysis, internet, word processing, scientific graphics, literature searches, and creating publication-quality figures.
Skill in working in a fast-paced research laboratory with deadlines for research results for grant proposals, manuscripts, and presentations at scientific meetings.
Skilled communicator in person, by phone, and in writing to diverse groups of persons who are laboratory staff, students, administrative staff, and academic faculty.
Ability to learn new computational techniques and adapt them to ongoing research projects.
Ability to provide oral presentation and explanation of research methods and results.
Ability to keep detailed and understandable records of experimental procedures, results, and evaluation of research outcomes.
Ability to write unit tests, and integration tests for research software.
Ability to make improvements on existing procedures that require trouble-shooting.
Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting open source software.
Willing to work some nights and weekends, depending on needs of the research.
