As a Patient Financial Specialist Lead, you need to know how to:
Meet with patients and screen for potential Medicaid/State Public Benefit eligibility according to state based guidelines and complete and submit appropriate applications to Department of Human Services or MA Site as applicable and follows up through determination. Programs/Categories include but are not limited to: MAGI, EMA, Pregnancy, Childrenâ™s Medicaid Programs, CHP+, QMB/SLMB, Long Term Care, etc.
Screen and determine patient eligibility for CICP based on state guidelines at SCL Healthâ™s CICP affiliated facilities.
Successfully complete annual Certified Application Counselor certification training and CAAS certification site training as offered by the State and/or Federal Marketplace.
Educate patients about the Affordable Care Act, potential eligibility during both open enrollment and in the situation of a life qualifying events. Explain qualified health plans, essential health benefits, differences in plan affordability, premium tax credits, cost sharing. Assist individuals navigating through the web based State or Federal Marketplace.
Provide procedure Price Quotes to patients and complete Bariatric and Cosmetic Contracts for elective procedures. Assist expectant mothers who are uninsured and ineligible for public benefits sign up for SCL Healthâ™s Uninsured Maternity Program.
Provide patients with an Explanation of Benefits, answer questions related to coverage and billing.
Complete Point of Service Collections of co-pays/deductibles/deposits, arrange payment plans and process contract payments in Wells Fargo system and Epic.
Utilize work queues in Epic to identify discharged-Self Pay Patients needing screening. Accurately update the Epic system with account notes, coverage change, Billing Indicators, payment adjustments for all actions completed.
Demonstrate discretion in verbal and written communication with patients and SCL Health staff ensuring patient confidentiality at all times.
Act as front line resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for team. Assist with Quality Review and special projects, audits, reporting, and research. Assist with new hire onboarding and training to address needs and/or skill set gaps. Monitor system site daily work queues and report monthly KPIs to leadership team.

High School Diploma or equivalent
Current Certified Application Counselor (CAC) certification and Certified Application Assistant Site (CAAS) certification
Minimum of two (2) years of hospital site financial counseling experience
Demonstrated understanding of State and Federal Programs available
Demonstrated knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, SSDI, and SSI qualification
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the 501r Regulation
Previous Certified Application Counselor training (CAC) â“ state and/or federal
At least three (3) years of financial counseling and previous hospital/medical office, medical insurance and/or customer service experience
Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish
