The Clinical Safety Advisor position is responsible for generalist safety advisor duties for all campus areas and specialist duties for clinical areas. See the Job Summary section of this posting for Safety Advisor generalist duties. Clinical Safety Advisor specialist duties are as follows: 1.Facilitate and assist with the preparation of clinical safety policies and procedures, including the annual update of the Yale University Infection Control/Infection Manual. 2.Train and educate healthcare, clinical and other staff on PPE use (e.g., respiratory protection), disinfection, waste management and the implementation of practices and procedures to prevent transmission of organisms and infections (infection prevention), including standards for Bloodborne Pathogens, and Standard and Universal Precautions. 3.Conduct audits of outpatient care clinics and other locations to evaluate conformity with EHS standards, including those for infection control, PPE, controlled substances, formaldehyde, biomedical and chemical waste (e.g., inspection of Satellite Accumulation Areas), radiation producing equipment, lasers, magnetic resonance imaging, legionella testing and controls, and adverse event reporting. Recommends corrective measures. 4.Help clinics identify appropriate disinfection, decontamination and sterilization methods 5. Assess PPE practices and facilitate appropriate assessment and use of gloves, respirators, lab coats and appropriate attire. Facilitate fit testing and medical clearances for respirator use. 6.Assists with the review of existing and new medical devices, including those with integrated engineering controls designed to minimize exposure to microbiological agents. 7.Assess the proper use and operation of safety critical equipment, including autoclaves, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, emergency showers and emergency eyewashes. 8.Directs Yale University's needlestick prevention and sharps injury accident investigation program in clinics (to comply with OSHA's Needlestick Prevention Act) by identifying safe sharps devices and overseeing trials of new or recommended safe sharps in clinic locations. 9.Facilitate the safe and compliant transport of samples and other hazardous material; participate on the EHS Shipping Team for the transport of clinical samples within and outside of Yale 10. Review construction plans for new or proposed clinic spaces, renovation plans for updating existing clinics and facility information for newly acquired clinical spaces; participates on new construction and renovation design projects to provide infection prevention expertise; assist with the development of dust control mitigation plans and the monitoring of construction activities within or near outpatient and related clinic locations. 11. Monitor Yale students interning or working in clinical environments to ensure appropriate supervision and safety training. 12. Assist clinics with EHS aspects of their preparation for inspections for the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA), College of American Pathologist (CAP), the State Department of Public Health and other regulatory or accrediting entities. 13. Serves as Secretary of the Yale University Infection Control Committee, setting agendas, writing minutes and disseminating information to members and clinics. 14. Where applicable, facilitate the maintenance of the clinic's OSHA 300 log for workplace related injuries and illnesses of Yale employees. 15. Investigate clinic-originating infections and outbreaks, including nosocomial and occupationally acquired infections.16.Respond to other emergencies and incidents; follow-up on problems requiring immediate attention; monitor issues until resolved; and be available as an off-hours emergency resource. 17. Report (in writing) to clinic management: a) the results of audits, b) training compliance, and c) incident reports. 18. Perform other duties as assigned. Preferred Education: Knowledge of hazardous waste management and RCRA regulations is strongly preferred. Knowledge of DOT and IATA regulations strongly preferred. Required Skill/ability 5: Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously due to the diversity of EHS services and the wide-range of potential work locations on campus. Work collaboratively with all EHS sections and programs. General knowledge of State and Federal environmental health and safety regulations. Ability to participate as a member of the EHS on-call emergency response team. Work Week: Standard (M-F equal number of hours per day) University Job Title: Clinical Safety Advisor Required Skill/ability 1: Superior oral and written communication skills to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with nurse managers, clinic directors, clinical coordinators, physicians, nurses, other affiliated healthcare personnel, students, faculty, staff, coworkers, public, and regulatory agencies. Required Skill/ability 4: Demonstrated skills and knowledge in technical safety disciplines (e.g., radiation safety, industrial hygiene, biosafety, chemical safety, environmental monitoring and sampling methods). Knowledge and skills to conduct in-service training and educational programs. Required Skill/ability 2: Knowledge of medical procedures performed in outpatient clinic settings within the Yale Medical Group, Yale Health and related healthcare facilities. Ability to identify infection control issues in outpatient clinics and related settings and make recommendations for corrective actions to address them.

1. Bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field and at least 4 years of experience in a related position with at least one year of infection control/infection prevention experience 2. Have demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and current regulatory and professional society guidelines 3. Working knowledge of infection prevention regulations, standards and guidelines. Knowledge of safety and/or environmental issues, including rules and regulations that pertain to them. |
