The Global Head of Legal serves as a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team within State Street Global Markets to provide both business and legal counsel in support of achievement of their strategic goals and objectives. The position requires an in-depth understanding of, among other areas, the global laws and regulations impacting equities and fixed income trading, transition management, futures, foreign exchange, derivatives, securities lending (agency and principal), electronic trading platforms, state and federal fiduciary obligations, and investment advisory arrangements.
Managing, developing and engaging an experienced team of professionals (over thirty lawyers worldwide) responsible for all aspects of legal support for State Street Global Markets, including contract drafting and negotiations, client support, product development and product jurisdictional expansion, and risk identification and management.
Provide critical senior leadership both within and beyond the legal department by demonstrating the values and culture of the overall organization, inspiring others to collaborate and achieve success under both positive and adverse circumstances and supporting a positive, diverse and results-oriented work environment.
Stay abreast of material changes in laws and regulations, worldwide, impacting State Street Global Markets and, where appropriate, seek to influence changes in such laws, regulations and policy.
Collaborate with senior legal and business partners in other divisions and corporate functions to ensure coordination of legal advice impacting the global business strategies and client relationships of State Street Corporation.
Actively participate in corporate and legal governance processes and provide risk-management leadership worldwide by proactively identifying, mitigating and, where appropriate, remediating market, legal, fiduciary and counterparty risk in the supported business lines as well as across other divisions of the organization.
Monitor and manage exposure to regulatory investigations and litigation (and potential litigation), and recommend actions including settlement where appropriate to reduce overall financial and reputational costs to the organization.
Support, as necessary, the structuring and negotiation of mergers and acquisition transactions impacting State Street Global Markets and provide counsel on both the business and legal ramifications of significant strategic imperatives, including possible joint ventures and other commercial arrangements.
EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES
Extensive Legal Experience
The qualified candidate must have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and a minimum of twelve years of relevant legal experience in the financial services industry, ideally at a well-regarded law firm followed by in-house leadership experience, preferably with exposure to capital markets and/or derivatives activities.

The candidate ideally will have a demonstrated ability to think outside the box, providing innovative legal solutions to solve his or her external and internal client's problems, reduce the impact of global regulatory change on an organization's operating model and enable the organization to innovate and effectively compete in a timely and efficient manner.
A track record as an effective and engaging leader who can build, develop and motivate a legal team, as well as a proven ability to delegate, prioritize and focus the team on the most critical issues or projects to consistently deliver results. The candidate has judgment, integrity, courage and self-confidence, but also respect for others, regardless of position, and a willingness to work as a team member. The candidate must be able to operate effectively within a matrix management framework, respecting and encouraging proper local governance while also ensuring a consistent quality approach to legal and regulatory risk management across regions.
Communication and Influencing Skills
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and have a demonstrated ability to demystify technical legal and regulatory issues to executive management and articulate clear strategies and/or solutions to manage those issues. A professional that has the courage of his or her own convictions and is willing to step up and articulate a contrary position in appropriate situations.
COMPENSATION A highly competitive compensation package is available to qualified candidates. The package includes base salary, annual incentive bonus, participation in the long-term incentive plan, and other benefits.
