The City University of New York's Office of Research seeks a University Dean of Research to lead the Research Development Division of the Office of Research (OR), providing support for students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty and foster collaborative and transdisciplinary research innovations. The Dean will enhance a growing and innovative research milieu for CUNY and its stakeholders across the City, State, nation, and beyond.
CUNY's Office of Research supports the research and scholarly pursuits of the CUNY community from students to senior faculty; provides assurance to funding agencies and to the public that University research is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical and compliance standards; and facilitates and enhances technology commercialization, entrepreneurship, and economic development activities.
The University Dean for Research (UDR) will serve as a senior strategic advisor to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and lead the Research Development division, which provides support to the CUNY research community. The UDR will work to ensure that the University engages in purposeful discovery at the frontiers of innovation, and develops the next generation of thoughtful, impactful scholars. The UDR will support faculty research by overseeing internal grant programs, promoting interdisciplinary and inter-sector research collaborations, and developing and implementing a Research Fellows Program. The UDR will support students by overseeing undergraduate research programs and facilitating internship opportunities, and will provide support to postdoctoral fellows.
Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, the University Dean's responsibilities are as follows:
Oversees internal grant programs that support strategic interdisciplinary, inter-sector collaborations, proposal processes (application flow and review process, funding recommendations to AVC), and evaluating program success.
Oversees faculty workshops in key areas such as climate change, public health and health disparities, AI and public interest in technology, and others to foster connections and research collaborations. Fosters University collaboration to develop high-level coordinated grants in response to COVID-19.
Works with AVC for Research to support research reopening across the University, with regard to risk management, continuity, and researcher safety as it relates to COVID-19.
Oversees and collaborates with key stakeholders to implement seminars on grant writing, including those for specific types of funding (e.g., NIH, NSF, DoD).
Develops and implements a funding success program linking funded with novice faculty.
Develops and implements a Research Fellows Program for faculty in residence.
Organizes strategic programs/opportunities to enhance student research experiences.
Collaborates with internal and external partners to facilitate internship capacity for undergraduate and graduate students.
Provides support to postdoctoral fellows across the University, collaborating with internal stakeholders.
Ensures programmatic excellence by monitoring and evaluating student achievement, staff performance, financial resource management, and enrollment/participation patterns across programs.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
The Dean will hold an earned doctorate, preferably in a STEM discipline, with a strong background in research and teaching, and an active extramural funded research program. The successful candidate will have experience in leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration in a dynamic academic environment; will have effective consultative, negotiation, and communication skills; and will be committed to diversity and promoting a culture that nurtures inquiry and scholarship across multiple disciplines.
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in running an effective research laboratory that supports undergraduate and graduate students, and, preferably, postdoctoral fellows.
Established ability to secure external research funding from various sources, such as federal (e.g., NSF, NIH, DoD), foundations, municipal, state, industry, etc.
Demonstrated capacity for building effective research collaborations
Functional operating knowledge of CUNY infrastructure, traditions, and environment..
Demonstrated experience and professional stature to work effectively with University administrators and faculty, and non-profit and private sector leaders.
Strong understanding of the importance of using data for evaluation and program management and ability to implement evaluation outcomes in decision making with multiple stakeholders ranging from program staff, participants, and funders.
Strong strategic planning and leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams to develop work plans with clear and measurable goals, assess progress, and guide improvement when needed.
Strong project and team management abilities, and high integrity.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively engage multiple audiences.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, think strategically, creatively problem solve, and meet deadlines, in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment.
