The incumbent will work as Research Associate responsible for preparation and execution of wet lab experiments and for basic data analysis in a behavioral research laboratory at the Department of Psychiatry. Duties will include independently performing full range of DNA/RNA isolation and preparation of DNA libraries for next-generation sequencing, adapting and developing novel molecular assays at scale, programming and maintaining liquid handling robot to perform assays in 96-well plates, implementing and optimizing new DNA extraction protocol using magnetic beads, implementing and optimizing RipTide protocol for DNA library preparation, and extending these functions to tissue samples from various organisms.
Responsibilities will also include conducting data collection and assisting with interpretation and evaluation of data for accuracy, conducting oral and written data presentations in internal lab meetings. The incumbent may be involved in husbandry of the mouse colony and testing live mice in various behavioral tasks. Other duties include general lab maintenance tasks such as maintaining clean testing areas, keeping lab equipment functional, preparing stock solutions, and ordering supplies. Incumbent will be expected to keep meticulous paper and digital records. Incumbent must be able to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
Theoretical knowledge in Biology or Psychology or related field as typically attained by a Bachelor's Degree; or an equivalent combination of education experience.
Experience in high throughput methods for isolation and purification of DNA and RNA from tissue samples, operating robots and specialized equipment such as QIAsymphony, epMotion, NanoDrop, BioAnalyzer, Plate Reader.
Proven experience in molecular biology, especially in high throughput methods for library preparation for sequencing, operating specialized equipment such as Illumina HiSeq 4000, MiSeq, Q-bit, BioAnalyzer, PippinHT etc.
Skill and ability to maintain a variety of written and/or computer records for activities including, but not limited to, supply inventories, animal care and safety records, sequenced DNA library database, nucleic acid isolation and purification logs, etc.
Proven experience in molecular biology techniques and Good Laboratory Practice sufficient to independently develop standard operating procedures compatible with high-throughput protocols.
Demonstrated experience, knowledge and ability to collect, input, summarize, and analyze data from all laboratory testing instruments, including making formal graphs.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the skill to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and interact with clients and colleagues with diverse personalities and educational levels, using diplomacy, flexibility, and tact.
Demonstrated experience using aseptic techniques to accurately prepare complex solutions, plates, media, etc.
Experience and skill to perform genotyping of mice and rats using polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis.
Demonstrated experience in programming and maintaining liquid handling robot to perform assays in 96-well plates.
Proven ability to work independently or as part of a team, with the ability to receive and follow instruction from multiple work directors.
Working knowledge and experience in animal care, in handling and breeding animals.
