The admissions counselor, multicultural recruitment and outreach position is responsible for the development and implementation of innovative and effective recruitment initiatives, programs, and application management to ensure Portland State University meets enrollment goals. This position participates in all of the division’s enrollment strategies, but prioritizes recruitment initiatives and outreach of African American, African, and Black students, with an emphasis on serving students in the Portland Metro area. The Admissions Counselor works extensively and collaboratively with key constituencies to ensure effectiveness throughout the recruitment, admission, and enrollment process. The admissions counselor will have specific assignments related to the needs of students in the Portland Metro area, collaboration with high schools, community colleges, and community organizations.
The Admissions Counselor will represent the University and its academic programs and services to prospective students and their families, high school and college personnel, partner institutions, community organizations, and the public. The counselor must be effective at independently planning recruitment strategies including high school visits, area receptions, and individual meetings. The admissions counselor is a front-line service provider with primary responsibility for student admission counseling, recruitment travel in- and out-of-state, and the management of assigned geographic territories. The position requires a significant level of independent judgement and autonomy with regard to work planning, representation of the University to students, families and educational counselors and staff, and application of admission policy through the secondary review of admissions applications.

Travel within assigned territories to attract prospective students and cultivate relationships with high school and community college personnel with supervisor approval and abiding by university travel policies;
Utilizing data trends recommend and develop innovative recruitment methods and strategies to recruit prospective students in assigned territories;
Develop methods and strategies for conducting outreach to and recruiting African American, African, and Black students to PSU;
Develop methods and strategies for recruiting students from the Portland Metro area to PSU;
Collaborates with Diversity and Multicultural Student Services, Financial Aid and various other University offices to develop a more seamless transition for students of color entering the University;
Conduct recruitment visits to community colleges, community organizations, and other recruitment venues; participate in Oregon Public University tours;
Plan, coordinate, and lead recruitment events such as Admitted Student Receptions, Instant Viking, and Counselor Breakfasts in assigned territories, following established budgetary guidelines.
Lead information sessions during weekly campus visit programs;
Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with high school counselors, community college advisors and partners, community organizations and other key influencers;
Build relationships and oversee territory management of prospective students, school personnel, families, and make referrals as necessary given the specific needs of students; and
Analyze results of recruitment strategies, and activities, and prepare reports and/or contribute to departmental reports as required.
Administrative and Programmatic Support, 40% of your time
Advise students and key influencers on admission and financial aid standardized processes based of established university guidelines;
Respond to correspondence and inquiries from prospective students and record interactions and transactions in CRM for students within assigned territories;
Collect, maintain and enter data on student contact and interactions, including notes from virtual, phone and in-person meetings in CRM;
Participate in Admissions events/programs and other University programs as needed and as assigned;
Review student admission applications holistically to determine their ability to succeed using established university assessment tools;
Counsel students in person, virtually, via email, and phone regarding transfer information, transcripts, and other official documents, as well as basic academic requirements and transfer of credit;
Provide pre-advising on university requirements, AP/IB/CLEP, degree requirements, student support services, honors, residency and overall university requirements using established university requirements;
Act as liaison with other academic and/or administrative units to ensure optimal effectiveness throughout the recruitment, admission, and enrollment experience;
Collaborate with and support the efforts of campus partners (in- and out-of-state high school and community colleges) to assist with University enrollment goals, and to facilitate the admission and matriculation of new students to the University;
Collaborate with marketing, web services and social media platforms to develop print and web content to increase communication that informs and attracts potential applicants;
Leverage University and NACAC policies in making admissions decisions;
Participate in professional development opportunities and work groups for admissions staff, programs and activities that aid in increased productivity and promote the recruitment of students to PSU; and
Other duties as assigned
One year of related experience in admissions, recruitment, student advising, or closely related field.
Demonstrated experience working with African American, African and Black student populations
Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal presentation, and organizational skills.
Ease in using technology for communication, record keeping and management of data.
Demonstrated ability to interact cooperatively and sensitively with individuals from other cultures, ethnic groups, lifestyles and backgrounds.
Ability to critically and logically analyze, synthesize, interpret and extrapolate admission data, regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, pay attention to detail and produce desired results.
