Serves as intake immigration advisor to provide high level support with the development and delivery of student immigration services. Responsible for the coordination and review of incoming immigration service requests, including issuance of visa documents and updating immigration records in compliance with regulations. Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) under the F-1 and J-1 student visa categories. Advises international students and campus departments on internal policies and processes and external rules and regulations; including responsibilities, benefits and alternatives under immigration regulations. Serves as primary advisor to new international students and coordinates institutional processes for requesting visa documents for all newly admitted international students.
Bachelor's degree with minimum of one (1) year of practical experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Strong knowledge of federal regulations affecting international populations, especially those in F and J visa statuses. Familiarity with the other visa statuses used in higher-educational institutions.
Demonstrated experience with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and government reporting requirements.
Demonstrated experience advising international students and academic departments/units; and knowledge of academic departments, academic culture at a large research university.
Ability to mediate problems and handle sensitive issues that require tact and confidentiality. Must have demonstrable of counseling skills to be able to problem solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns, and make appropriate referrals.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and maintain effective relationships will students, campus administration, faculty, staff; and government officials.
Communication skills to share information with diverse population; and able to explain complex information to individuals with limited English skills.
Demonstrated skills to develop and implement training and information workshops and services to international student and department staff.
Writing, editing, and publication experience indicating a strong attention to detail.
Superior customer service, interpersonal, and communication capabilities.
Computer skills, working knowledge of spreadsheets, database, desktop publication software and web-design software.
Experience working with database that communicates with SEVIS system.
Familiarity with UC academic and immigration policies and procedures.
Knowledge of academic departments, academic culture at a large research university.
Special Conditions of Employment: Must be U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident to comply with Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations.
