Under the direction of the ICS Student Affairs Director, the incumbent independently performs a full range of academic counseling for the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences MS and PhD graduate student population (Computer Science, Informatics, Networked Systems, Software Engineering, and Statistics). Responsible for recruitment; admissions; Graduate Visit Day; orientation activities; program management; housing; TA Professional Development Program; I20, CPT, and OPT documentation management; fellowships; degree certification; academic process and probation; and commencement. Interprets University and School policies and procedures pertaining to degree requirements, satisfactory progress, deadlines, grade changes, GPA conversions, and exceptions. Utilizes counseling skills to assess student needs and refers to campus resources ( International Center, Career Pathways, Disability Services Center, Counseling Center, Office of Access and Inclusion, Graduate Division, Registrar's Office, etc.). Works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other campus departments on issues related to the ICS graduate student population. Some attendance is required at evening and weekend events.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals including students, faculty, administrators, and the general public. Must be able to positively and constructively communicate and interact with others at work. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge and skills in academic counseling techniques and practices.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, tack, and discretion in completing all responsibilities and duties associated with the position while demonstrating flexibility and patience.
Ability to analyze situations, define problems and objectives, formulate logical conclusions, and recognize alternative solutions and their implications, and initiate plan of action.
Skill in planning and organizing a wide variety of detailed tasks while maintaining flexibility in accomplishing unit goals, especially when faced with frequent interruptions.
Ability to work evenings and weekends for special events.
Knowledge of SEVIS policies and procedures.
Knowledge of UCI academic services, FERPA, and Academic Senate Rules and Regulations.
Knowledge of the Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences degree programs. Knowledge of ICS and UCI graduate admission requirements.
