The Research Assistant in this position will be responsible for supporting clinical research and quality improvement projects under the direction of the Medical and Program Director for the Tobacco Treatment Service. He/she will treat patients from the outpatient population at UPMC specialty clinics.
The incumbent will be responsible for review of medical records; coordinating and administering tobacco treatment assessments during in person visits and telephone communications; data collection and entry; as well as coordinating follow-up care and providing counseling as needed to participants. Data collection will include face - to - face and telephonic counseling with participants, medical chart abstraction, and other assessment methods.
He/She will work in collaboration with counselors for the Tobacco Treatment Service. Prior experience in clinical research interventions with patients (such as motivational interviewing) or clinical experience (such as social work or psychology) is highly preferred because of the need to provide clinical care to patients in the outpatient and hospital setting. In addition, incumbent will assist with tasks which are supportive to grants, such as preparation of related manuscripts, presentations, and ancillary grant proposals.
This position requires a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in a health-related profession (e.g. nursing, social work, counseling, public health) is highly preferred. Willing to consider others with equivalent experience and education.
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) and basic knowledge of medical terminology required. One to two years of relevant research experience or direct patient care preferred. Previous research experience with scheduling, recruiting, and consenting patients (e.g., behavioral interventions, public health) or clinical experience (such as social work of psychology) is highly preferred.
Preference will be given to applications with experience conducting statistical and/or qualitative research. Prior experience working with individuals or patients that use tobacco products is also highly preferred.
