The Patient Financial Counselor reports directly to the Supervisor of Access Management and is responsible for promptly assisting patients obtain financial clearance to access service at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and its partnering facilities, in advance of their scheduled visit. They also assist with insurance coverage issues, providing clear and accurate financial information/options, preparing self pay estimates, collecting deposits/payments and creating payment arrangements related to cancer care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Children's Hospital.
Conducts pre-registration and registration interviews to collect and accurately document patient demographic, financial, and relevant personal information into the hospital information system.
Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits using automated eligibility systems, payer websites, and or calls the insurance carriers. Updates insurance information as needed and identifies new high risk insurance patients requiring financial assistance.
Contacts primary care physician offices and/or payers to request authorization/referral for high risk patients to receive services at Dana-Farber and its partnering facilities, as applicable.
Compiles and submits documentation from the clinical team, MD and/or other providers, requested by the insurance carrier, to support the authorization/referral request.
Effectively communicates the financial clearance status with the clinical team, MD, other providers and the patient. Assist patients/providers appeal denied services, coordinates peer to peer conferences.
Accurately and courteously explains policies regarding financial assistance programs. Assist patients/families apply for/change health plans, if applicable. .
Prepares self pay estimates based on the treatment plan, collects deposits, co-pays, and deductibles from self-pay or other high-risk patients.
Accurately and courteously explains Advanced Beneficiary Notices/Waivers and obtains patients signature and collects any required deposit/payment.
Updates changes to patient insurance, PCP, and/or demographic information as needed
Documents daily activities in a timely, thorough, and accurate manner into the hospital information system
Completes assigned work queues, projects, and other duties as directed
Promotes and maintains positive working relationships within the department, within the institute, with Brigham and Women and Children's Hospitals, and with the DFCI satellite locations.
Complies with all Dana-Farber and HIPAA confidentiality policies.
High school Diploma/GED required, Associates degree or relevant post-secondary education highly preferred. Prior hospital/physician office registration/billing experience required; minimum of 2 years of financial experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting required. Knowledge of managed care policies and medical terminology preferred. Working knowledge of GE Centricity or other hospital/professional services billing systems. Strong understanding of Microsoft Office product suite
Excellent customer service and communication skills, both written and verbal. Self starter with strong team player and leadership abilities. Strong analytical problem solving skills and mathematical/accounting skills.
Ability to prioritize and meet pre-determined deadlines. Advanced technical skills, as appropriate.
