The T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy & Compassion was established at UC San Diego through a generous gift from South Dakota businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford. The Institute will undertake three ambitious aims: explore the neurobiology of compassion; transform the medical education curriculum; and address the epidemic of physician burnout. As a key component of the Sanford Institute, the Center for Interpersonal Communication seeks to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes by enhancing interpersonal communication between physicians and patients, and address physician burnout through didactic and experiential communication training. The Center will also collaborate with other Centers within the Sanford Institute to produce research and data on outcomes associated with the implementation of communication training at UC San Diego. The Sanford Institute invites applications for the Director of the Center for Interpersonal Communication. Jointly reporting to the Director of the Center for Mentorship and Communication in Medicine and the Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Director will support the Centers' internal and external activities. This role will lead activities to develop and launch the new Center, including establishing communication standards for physician-patient interactions; developing a system-wide educational curriculum; leading training sessions and other activities to promote best practices; and serve as an advisor to physicians and leaders across the enterprise on empathetic interpersonal communication and effective patient-provider relationships. In collaboration with Health Sciences and Department leadership, the Director will ensure that activities are well-integrated and applicable to the clinical setting. The Director will be expected to ensure alignment with the mission and goals of T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, and foster strong collaborations with its other Center Directors. UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research, and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. Required Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: The Director of the Center for Interpersonal Communication at UC San Diego Health Sciences is considered at-will. This position will have annual performance reviews with a formal committee review every fifth year. The appropriate series and appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor Rank based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Series will include HS Clin, Clinical X and Adjunct.
