Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) seeks a visionary Vice Dean of Education to play a vital leadership role in one of the nation's most prestigious medical schools. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished and innovative physician-leader to build upon the successes of medical education at Columbia while advancing the academic mission and innovations in the field.
VP&S consistently ranks among the best medical schools in the nation, and its research consistently ranks among the best funded and productive in academic medicine. The College is home to 620 MD students and 393 PhD students, all of whom belong to the most diverse student body of any medical school in the United States, with recent classes evenly divided by gender. A scholarship program made possible by the extraordinary generosity of Roy and Diana Vagelos and others allowed VP&S to become the first of its peer medical schools to eliminate need-based loans. In addition to the scholarship program, the Vagelos Education Center and its simulation center were constructed to provide further learning opportunities for VP&S and its students. VP&S is part of a unique collection of health sciences schools that make up the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, an integral part of the Washington Heights community in upper Manhattan, which is one of New York City’s most diverse neighborhoods.
VP&S is guided by the principle that medical education is university education, and that education is a lifelong pursuit that prepares the next generation of leaders in medicine and biomedical research, informs the medical research used to reduce the burden of human disease, and helps patients pursue health and wellness. VP&S offers a wide variety of degree programs with a strong focus towards preparing its students to become innovators in their fields. MD is the largest degree program, and its curriculum—implemented in 2009—remains innovative with an accelerated pre-clerkship curriculum, emphasis on small-group learning, state-of-the-art simulation, and a required scholarly project. The curriculum has served as model for a number of medical schools in the nation and continues to do so for VP&S's peer institutions.
The next Vice Dean of Education will join a medical school committed to medical education and how it interplays between the research and clinical missions. The vice dean will work with a variety of stakeholders to lead a meaningful and innovative curriculum reform that can be a model of medical education among VP&S's peers. This individual will understand LCME accreditation and ensure that VP&S's curriculum remans aligned with accreditation standards. The vice dean will inspire, lead, and join VP&S faculty in rigorous medical education study and publication on conceptual, research, and policy topics to further the educational mission. Central to this is ensuring that the student population continues to be the most diverse in the country through concerted effort and attention. The vice dean will ensure that students are supported and nurtured as they form their professional identities as physicians. This individual will also continue to foster a culture where educators feel valued and supported in their work, building trust and partnerships with different constituents in the College to encourage interprofessional education. The vice dean will be a champion of student success, particularly in residency matching.
